UPDATED SNOW REPORT – March 22, 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports weather has been really warm (up to +12) over the last week, which prevented us from grooming.  There is still good snow on the trails, but they are getting bumpy in some sections. The sled touring guys are still running a few tours, and Sun Peaks has cat groomed to the trail head in the P6 parking lot. The road is paved right to the trail head, but the parking area is now deep mud.  Some mornings the mud is frozen. If the mud is too deep, you can unload at the trail head and park at P5 and walk back up to P6.  The Skandic and groomer have now been relocated back to Kamloops so no further grooming will occur this season and this will be our last weekly update.  Given the light snow this year we still had a great sledding season up here at Sun Peaks.

UPDATED - Porcupine Ridge – You can stage up at the gravel pit on the Watching Creek FSR, or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. The Lac Du Bois FSR has been recently graded up to McQueen Lake and is in excellent condition. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s. We drove to the gravel pit to unload and took the Watching Creek FSR up. The trails were hard early in the day (scratchers) but softened as the temperature climbed. The KSA trails are still in good condition with lots of decent riding conditions.

We rode to Wendego, The Lookout and Luc’s, returned by the Rendezvous Trail. This was our last ride of the season and my last snow report until next year. If you want to get another ride in the Porcupine will not disappoint.

SNOW REPORT – March 14, 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports they had 20cm of new snow over the last week and the riding has been very good. Given recent stucks and digging the base is around 6ft. The main trails were groomed today and while soft they are still in good condition. Starting Thursday, we started to get very warm weather with up to +6C during the day. For the weekend temps are forecast to reach +12C, including in the alpine, with no overnight freezing. The P6 parking lot is mostly paved so mud is not presently an issue. Longer range forecast is for cooling temps to return.

As a reminder, proof of KSA membership or paid trail fees need to be available for presentation for any day ridden, not just the weekends. We are out there riding mid-week and are doing trail checks and some individuals are surprised and rather unfriendly. If you want to play you’ve got to pay.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage up the Watching Creek FSR, or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. A skiff of new snow at the Chalet and 3” at Luc’s all with a good base. The Sawmill FSR is bare up to the Chalet. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s. We visited Wendego, Luc’s and Sam’s with all trails clear and good snow conditions. The investment the KSA has made in trail grooming this season has made them more durable during warmer weather. These trails are in good condition considering the warming weather! Another great day with some clear skies and great snow conditions!

SNOW REPORT – March 7, 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports conditions are great. It remained cold (lows of -14C) all last week with +20cm of new snow in the last 7 days. Trails were getting bumpy given higher usage, but main trails were groomed on Wednesday, including out to the cabin. Base is around 5.5ft and untracked powder can still be found. Light snow is forecast for the next 4 days with lows around -8C and daytime highs around -3C.  Village elevation will likely see daytime temps around 0C.  Some more grooming is planned for Friday.

As a reminder, proof of KSA membership or paid trail fees need to be available for presentation for any day ridden, not just the weekends. We are out there riding mid-week and are doing trail checks and some individuals are surprised and rather unfriendly. If you want to play you’ve got to pay.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage at 16KM up the Watching Creek FSR, 22KM or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. Best staging at the Snowarama parking lot opposite the Chalet at 31.5KM. About 1 1/2” fresh snow at lower elevations and 3 1/2” at Sam’s all with a great base. The Sawmill FSR is plowed and sanded with logging truck traffic. We encountered an over width lowbed with equipment coming down the Sawmill in the morning. They are removing logging equipment while the roads are good, so radio communication is vital. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s going up. We visited Wendego, Sam’s, Luc’s as well as Hiahkwah cabin and it was awesome! All trails are clear and have good very snow conditions. Leo has groomed all trails earlier this week and they are exceptional! Epic day with clear skies and great snow conditions!

SNOW REPORT – Feb 29, 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports all trails were groomed today, including down to Cahilty Meadows.  Conditions are the best of the year with a solid base and at least 30cm of fresh powder.  In some places snow drifts are over 4ft.  Most of the powder is untracked given light sled pressure in the last 7 days.  Temps this week were down to -20C, but today temps in the village rose to 0C.  Trail conditions have remained below freezing.  Weekend forecast is for cold temps with -14C lows and highs of -11C with 2 to 5cm of snow expected for Saturday.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage at 16KM up the Watching Creek FSR, 22KM or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. The Sawmill FSR is plowed and sanded with logging truck traffic. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s going up. We have two cleared parking areas at 31.5KM as we now have the Snowarama parking area opposite the Chalet. About 1 1/2” fresh snow at lower elevations and 4” at Sam’s all with a good base. We visited Wendego, Sam’s and Luc’s. Groomed trail conditions were awesome. The meadows looked untouched with 6” to 8” fresh snow. It has been windy up there and it all looks new. Leo has groomed all trails yesterday and they were epic as it snowed Wednesday night!

Top photo from Sunpeaks thank you Michael.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to support our FAMILY DAY/SNOWARAMA fundraiser. We had a really good turn out and the weather held out till almost all were safely back in town. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who came out to help. We have no totals yet but we will post them when we have acurate numbers. Again thank you everyone for making this successful event possible.

SNOW REPORT – Feb 22 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports all trails were groomed on Tuesday, including to the Cahilty Meadows and over to the KSA shelter.  On Wednesday we received +13cm of wet snow, with rain at the village level.  The trails remain in good condition and most riders are venturing into cut blocks. Temperatures have been warmer with day time highs of +5C at village elevation.  We currently have dense fog lasting throughout the morning but finally burned off this afternoon and we are seeing sunny skies. Temps are forecast to turn colder for the weekend, down to -12C on Sunday.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage at 16KM up the Watching Creek FSR, 22KM or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. About 1 1/2” fresh snow at lower elevations and 3” at Sam’s all with a good base. The Sawmill FSR is plowed and sanded with logging truck traffic. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s going up. We visited Phoenix, Wendego, the Lookout, Sam’s, Luc’s as well as Hiahkwah and Tsintsunko cabins and enjoyed it all. All trails are clear and have good snow conditions. Leo has groomed all trails yesterday and they are Very Good! He has also groomed from Sam’s all the way to the end of FSR to Luc’s cabin. This may be Leo’s best work yet on the groomer!

Epic day with decent skies and great snow conditions!

Much thanks to Stingray Media for their donation of airtime this coming week advertising our event on radio channels 103.1FM, 97.5FM and 6.10AM.

SNOW REPORT – Feb 15 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports they had +25cm of new powder snow this week, and conditions are the best they've been all year.  It is sunny and cold (-14C) and the trails are hard packed so scratchers are recommended.  We have been riding carefully into cut blocks.  Generaly trail conditions are in good condition and have stood up well to use but be careful of hard frozen ruts on non-groomed trails.  Most of the open creeks have frozen again given the week of colder temperatures. Sun Peaks has snowcat groomed out of P6 a few times this week.  We likely will be out grooming Friday/Saturday.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage at 16KM up the Watching Creek FSR, 21.5, 22KM or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. About 3” fresh snow at lower elevations and 10” at Sam’s all with a good base. The Sawmill FSR is plowed and sanded with logging truck traffic. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s going up. We visited Hiahkwah,  Tsintsunko and Luc’s Cabins. All trails are clear and have great snow conditions. Leo and Larry will be grooming the main trails starting early Friday so please watch out for this equipment. Ensure you make eye contact with the operator as he will move over and stop to allow you to pass safely.

Epic day with clear skies and great snow conditions!

SNOW REPORT – Feb 8 2024

Sunpeaks – Michael reports that snow conditions are very good.  They have a hard base of about 4-5 ft with about 20cm of new snow on top of the base.  Some people are now venturing into cut blocks. Trails were rough but we groomed the main trails multiple times today so they are now really good with freezing conditions and its currently snowing.   We have not been grooming down to the Cahilty Meadows due to flowing creeks. We have yet to groom out to the cabin as we've been busy sledding ourselves in the awesome conditions.  We did recently visit the cabin and Jim swept it out. Wolves are active in the area with deer kill sites occasionally on our trails.  We have been encountering moose and are trying to keep our distance. While grooming today I noticed some snow slide activity in the Gills - specifically the Elevators section. Some sledders sneak through this steep section to get to the top. This is a restricted closed area, but with these slides, sleds should REALLY keep out for their own protection.

Porcupine Ridge – You can stage at 16KM up the Watching Creek FSR, 21.5, 22KM or 31.5KM on the Sawmill FSR. Only about 1 to 2” fresh snow at lower elevations and 3 to 4” at the Chalet with a hard base. The Sawmill FSR is plowed and sanded with logging truck traffic. RR12 is the radio channel and call your KM’s going up. We visited the Lookout and Luc’s Cabins. Both locations have the fog poles installed by Leo, Francis, Jeff and Rolf. We found the deepest snow  towards the old mine past Sam’s Cabin.

Leo and Rick will be grooming the main trails starting early Friday so watch out for this equipment. Please ensure you make eye contact with the operator as he will move over and stop to allow you to pass safely.

UPDATED SNOW REPORT – Feb 2 2024

Sunpeaks –Updated report from KSA groomer operator Michael Meeks who was out on the trails today.

Groomed most of the trail system today and the trails are in surprisingly good condition (no dirt showing anywhere except P6 parking). The trails were frozen until around noon, when they started to get soft.  We have not yet groomed out to the cabin and what hasn’t been groomed is bumpy.

Groomed both routes into Cahilty Meadows, but it required crossing several scary deep streams.  With more sleds going through soon the creek crossings will be impassible. Cahilty Lake itself is all standing water.  I would advise everyone to stay off the lake, and the creeks running through the Cahilty Meadows are likely dangerous too.

We are forecast to get some colder weather.  In the morning there was “hero” snow everywhere which would make going into the cut blocks safe and fun as sleds will not sink and it is easy to see the obstacles.  If the snow is slushy I personally would not venture in.

LACK OF SNOW REPORT – Feb 1 2024

Sunpeaks –Report from KSA groomer operator Michael Meeks today (big shout out to Michael and Jim Sprang for their trail grooming). Sunpeaks had very heavy rain all day yesterday and overnight, with very warm temperatures. At village level a significant amount of snowpack lost. Temperatures today are still very warm (currently +5C at 6am) and we are still getting rain. We did not groom as planned as we are waiting for colder temperatures which are not expected until Saturday at the earliest. We don't know how badly our trail system has been hit, but I don't expect it is very good out there.  Before yesterday's monsoons the lakes and creeks were already very soft with a lot of standing water.  They would be treacherous now.

Porcupine – Report from Aaron Foster from Jan 31 (big shout out to Aaron for helping out with shelter maintenance).  Not much snow out there with the lower trails in late April conditions. The Chalet lost at least a foot or more since the weekend and dirt is everywhere. Water pooling on trails and meadows. Snow conditions on all trails and into the park is poor. The park is extremely difficult to ride. The morning was OK, but soon very heavy rain came down all the way up to the Lookout. It rained heavily all our way out.

Depressing news but there is hope as the temperatures are supposed to be falling this weekend and snow in the forecast.

NOTICE – The Groomer Will Be Operating in the Porcupine AreSunday Jan 28th

They will be grooming Watching Creek, Mosquito, Outlaw, Lyles Trail and back to the Chalet.

Due to rising temperatures the snow is sinking and the trails are rough.

Please watch out for this equipment and approach with caution.

Make sure the operator see’s you.

REVISED SNOW   REPORT – Jan 26 2024

Sunpeaks – This week the KSA groomed the Kamloops Truss trail, Outlaw trail, the trail between them and McGillivary FSR to km 30.

Snow conditions are excellent, with deep packed powder. Total snow pack is on average 5-6 feet with some spots considerably deeper.

All trails are in good condition.

Porcupine – The Sawmill FSR is graded and sanded. If you park at 21.5KM you can take Watching Creek FSR. If you park at 22KM you can take Lyle’s trail. You can also drive up to the Chalet no problem. The previous powder snow pack has settled with an additional 10 cm of new snow. All trails are in good condition, the meadows are good but beware of big trenches cut when it was just powder. If you stay to the clearings you should be good. Fringe areas have snow covered willows which are prone to snow collapse.

Picture - we managed to get some sun today.

www.kamloopssnowmobile.com

SNOW   REPORT – Jan 25 2024

Sunpeaks – 38cm of new snow in the last 7 days, 9cm in the last 2 days. All trails are in good condition.

Porcupine – 10 cm new snow this week. Trails are in good condition. RTR needs some love. I’m riding there tomorrow and will give you an update.

The KSA invests heavily in trail maintenance and grooming at Sunpeaks and Porcupine areas. We log more than 3000 hrs per year in club related volunteer hours.

Operating and maintaining our grooming equipment is expensive. Our membership is currently lower than normal due to our late snow.

If you enjoy our efforts please join our club.

If you prefer you can purchase a day pass.

Jamies crew had a great day in the Porcupine last Saturday!

NOTICE – The Groomer Will Be Operating Early Tomorrow Morning (Jan 21rst)

They will start out at Watching Creek, Mosquito, Outlaw, Lyles Trail and back to the Chalet.

I was riding today and the trails were pounded powder and are rough

Please watch out for this equipment and approach with caution.

Make sure the operator see’s you.

The meadows are challenging with lots of waist level powder.

This area had high winds recently and there are drifts.

SNOW REPORT FOR DEC 29 2023

Drive up to KM 26 on the Watching Creek FSR or up to KM 31 (KSA Chalet) on the Sawmill FSR to unload. The Sawmill FSR has been plowed and is in good winter condition. Don’t unload at KM 20 or KM 22 as the Sawmill is bare gravel going up the hill just after KM 22. As the Sawmill and Watching have been plowed it is illegal to operate a snowmobile on them. Snow depth is decent with a measured 24” at Sam’s cabin. Road North of Sam’s going to the old mine is great with good snow. The Beaverhut FSR has not been plowed so you can ride on it. Groomer was out doing the trails. Not a lot of snow yet but enough to enjoy on the trails. Off the trails could be trouble.

THE PARK IS NOT OPEN YET SO PLEASE DO NOT ENTER IT

Pictures were taken today.

SNOW REPORT - Currently there is 2 1/2 feet of settled snow in the Porcupine with good riding conditions.

You can drive up to the KSA Chalet to unload or drive to KM26 up the Watching Creek FSR.

Welcome to the Kamloops Snowmobile Association

As an organization we aim to bring safe and fun family snowmobiling to the areas we manage.

we are powered (100%) by volunteers and work to keep riding areas open, accessible, and safe. Annually we groom hundreds of kilometers trails, and actively manage 2 riding areas. The organization also maintains and provides emergency warm up shelters in these riding areas. The KSA’s riding zones are:

Tranquille/Bonaparte Plateau (Porcupine Ridge)

Sunpeaks (Todd Mountain)

Our Operation

The Kamloops Snowmobile Association operates in partnership with Rec Sites and Trails BC (RSTBC), and the British Columbia Snowmobile Federation. The KSA Grooms in two ridings areas immediate to Kamloops. These trails serve as either rideable loops or access points into off trail boondocking and sub-alpine low slope terrain opportunities. We operate a BR 180 snow cat with a custom drag behind it and a Ski-Doo Skandic with a miniature clone of the large drag. These two pieces make up the majority of weekly grooming operations, with a few smaller drags used behind volunteer’s snowmobiles occasionally across the season. The KSA maintains a fleet of small tools and equipment to clear and brush the trails for rider safety. Annual membership ranges between 350-400 members from Kamloops and the surrounding communities.

Under our Partnership with RSTBC (Rec Sites and Trails BC) and BC Parks the KSA is responsible for maintenance and operation of 10 “emergency warm-up shelters”. These small cabins are public access and maintained in the area to provide safe shelter if required in an emergency. These facilities also serve as a place for riders to stop, rest, and socialize in our riding areas. The KSA also holds one of few Agreements with BC parks to snowmobile inside 3 provincial parks, Porcupine Meadows, Tsintsunko Lake, and Bonaparte Lake.

Our Community

The KSA runs on 100% Volunteer man power. Started in 1973, and operating stronger than ever with more then 3500 hours/year invested into snowmobiling in our area. Recipient of the Canadian Counsel of Snowmobile Organizations 2021 Canadian Snowmobile club of the year award, and multiple BCSF awards. Including one of our own directors receiving BCSF’s Presidents Award. The KSA welcomes new members and anyone wanting to get involved with supporting a future for snowmobiling in their community.
